In 1969 following an exhibition of my photographs of dancers at the Corcoran Gallery of Art I was invited to photograph Merce Cunningham. Over a period of a week I photographed him in his studio mornings and saw him perform nights with his company. A few months later I decided to put aside photography and concentrate on painting.
